US filmmaker Rob Reiner and his wife, photographer and producer Michele Singer Reiner, were found dead at their Los Angeles residence on Sunday, prompting a police investigation being treated as an apparent homicide.
Emergency crews were dispatched to the home shortly after 3:30pm local time following a medical assistance call. According to the Los Angeles Fire Department, responders discovered a 78-year-old man and a 68-year-old woman deceased inside the property. While authorities initially withheld identities, the couple were later confirmed by family members and senior officials, including Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass and California Governor Gavin Newsom.
Police investigate suspected homicide
The Los Angeles Police Department said patrol officers attending the scene found two bodies and immediately secured the area. Deputy Chief Alan Hamilton told reporters that detectives from the department’s robbery-homicide division were awaiting a search warrant before conducting a full examination of the home.
A law enforcement official familiar with the case said investigators believe the couple suffered stab wounds. A family member has reportedly been questioned as part of the early inquiry, though police have not named any suspects or made arrests. The official cause of death will be determined and formally released by the Los Angeles County Medical Examiner’s Office.
The house remained cordoned off as investigators continued to gather evidence, with authorities stressing that the investigation is still at an early stage.
Tributes pour in for a Hollywood icon
Rob Reiner, who celebrated his 78th birthday earlier this year, was one of Hollywood’s most influential directors. His body of work includes widely celebrated films such as This Is Spinal Tap, The Princess Bride, When Harry Met Sally…, and A Few Good Men. Before moving behind the camera, he rose to fame as an actor, playing Mike “Meathead” Stivic on the landmark television series All in the Family.
Reiner continued acting throughout his career, with appearances in films like Sleepless in Seattle and The Wolf of Wall Street, as well as television roles in New Girl and the fourth season of The Bear.
His wife, Michele Singer Reiner, was a respected photographer and producer. Among her most notable work was the photograph of Donald Trump used on the cover of Trump: The Art of the Deal.
The news prompted an outpouring of tributes from political leaders and figures across the entertainment industry. Mayor Bass described the deaths as “a devastating loss for our city and our country,” while Governor Newsom called Reiner a “big-hearted genius” whose work left a lasting cultural impact. Former president Barack Obama also paid tribute, praising Reiner for telling stories rooted in optimism and humanity.
