Revolut Services Restored After Google Cloud Outage Disrupts Banking Across Europe

Revolut has confirmed that its banking services have been restored following a major Google Cloud outage that disrupted card payments, money transfers and access to accounts for customers across Europe, including Ireland and the United Kingdom.

The disruption on Tuesday, October 20, affected multiple financial institutions and online services that rely on Google’s cloud infrastructure.

Revolut, which has approximately 3.4 million customers in Ireland, said customer funds and personal data remained safe throughout the incident.

What Caused the Revolut Outage?

Google attributed the disruption to a power-related incident in its europe-west2 cloud region, a London-based network of data centres supporting businesses across Europe.

Because Revolut uses Google Cloud infrastructure to operate parts of its platform, the incident affected several of its banking services.

Google said the problem had been mitigated for most customers, although a small number continued to experience difficulties during the recovery process.

Which Revolut Services Were Affected?

Throughout much of Tuesday, customers reported problems accessing the Revolut app and completing everyday banking transactions.

Disrupted services included card payments, bank transfers, ATM withdrawals, account top-ups, currency exchanges, stock trading and merchant payments.

Some users also experienced difficulties accessing Revolut’s in-app customer support.

At 4pm, the company’s service status page listed 31 services as partially unavailable.

By Tuesday evening, Revolut confirmed that customer services had been restored.

Revolut Says Customer Money and Data Remained Safe

In a statement to RTÉ News, Revolut apologized for the disruption and reassured customers that their money and personal information were secure.

The company said its teams had been working to resolve the incident since the problems were identified earlier in the day.

The outage was attributed to an infrastructure failure rather than a reported cyberattack.

Google Cloud Disruption Affected Other Major Services

Revolut was not the only organization affected.

Outage reports also involved Lloyds Bank, HSBC, Rightmove, DPD, Royal Mail and services associated with the UK’s National Health Service.

The incident highlighted the dependence of financial institutions and other essential services on major cloud technology providers.

It also exposed the practical difficulties faced by consumers who rely exclusively on digital banking platforms without alternative payment methods.

Outage Follows Two Recent Revolut Data Breaches

The service disruption comes after two separate data security incidents involving Revolut customers.

On September 14, some customers were informed that sensitive personal information, including identity documents and contact details, had been disclosed to criminals.

The company did not specify how many customers were affected.

Approximately 10 days later, Irish Revolut customers were notified of a separate security breach involving DriveWealth, a US brokerage provider that processes American stock trades for Revolut users.

DriveWealth said unauthorized access to historical customer information may have exposed names, contact details, addresses and employment information.

Neither breach was identified as the cause of Tuesday’s outage.
