Christina Applegate Reveals MS Misdiagnosis, Says She’s ‘Back at Square One’

Actress Christina Applegate has revealed that doctors have ruled out her previous multiple sclerosis (MS) diagnosis, leaving her uncertain about the cause of her ongoing health problems.

The 54-year-old Dead to Me and Anchorman star shared the news during an emotional episode of her MeSsy podcast, which she co-hosts with actress Jamie-Lynn Sigler.

Applegate, who publicly announced her MS diagnosis in August 2021, said the unexpected development had left her shocked and confused rather than relieved.

Christina Applegate Opens Up About MS Misdiagnosis

During the podcast, Applegate recalled being told by her doctor that she did not have multiple sclerosis.

“This may come as great news, but to me, I’m back at square one,” she said.

The actress explained that the change in diagnosis had not brought any improvement in her physical condition.

“You don’t get misdiagnosed and then all of a sudden I’m better,” she said, adding that some of her symptoms had worsened.

Applegate said she had experienced symptoms consistent with MS, but doctors now believe another condition may be responsible.

She did not disclose a confirmed alternative diagnosis.

Actress Says Symptoms Continue Despite New Findings

Applegate described the emotional difficulty of losing an explanation for the symptoms that have significantly affected her daily life.

She said she still requires a wheelchair for some medical appointments and struggles to walk even short distances.

The actress also spoke about the impact her health problems have had on her career and mental well-being.

Her original diagnosis came while she was filming the third and final season of Netflix’s Dead to Me. She later indicated that the series might be her final major acting role.

Applegate Reflects on Her Connection to the MS Community

Since announcing her diagnosis in 2021, Applegate has become a prominent advocate for people living with multiple sclerosis.

Through MeSsy, she and Sigler, who has MS, have discussed the physical and emotional challenges associated with chronic illness.

Applegate admitted that learning she had been misdiagnosed left her feeling as though she had disappointed the community she had come to represent.

She also explained that having a diagnosis had provided reassurance and a sense of belonging.

“I guess I felt comfort in having a name. I felt comfort in having an answer and a community,” she said.

What Happens Next for Christina Applegate?

Applegate has not revealed what condition doctors now suspect or whether further testing has established an explanation for her symptoms.

Her account underscores the uncertainty that can accompany complex neurological symptoms and the emotional impact of a changing medical diagnosis.
